Light and Moisture Meter

* Instantly tells you when to water your plants * Indicates how much light they need
* Help prevent over watering, scorching and poor growth * Plant care booklet gives individual needs for over 150 plants
This meter is two instruments in one: it tests both for moisture content in soil or compost and for the light falling onto a plant.
For moisture tests you push the probe down near the roots. For light, you hold the meter amongst the leaves of the plant and point the special light cell on the top edge of the instrument towards the light source.
The two-way switch on the front of the meter is a selector. Switch to the "Moisture" position for moisture and to the "Light" position for light.
There are two meter scales displayed on the dial of this meter:
1. The top scale is numbered from 1 (Dry) to 10 (Wet). This is your moisture reading scale.
2. The bottom scale shows letters from A (Low) through to H (High). This is your light reading scale.

The instrument is self-powered and does not require batteries or any external electrical source.

HOW TO TEST FOR LIGHT
TAKING A READING
1. Push the selector switch to "Light".
2. Hold the Meter so that the narrow, purple, rectangular "window" on top of the case is in the same position as the surface of the leaves at the top of the plant.
3. Aim the "window" towards the maximum light source and take your light reading from the lower scale, ('A' through to 'H') on the display. (The light is converted to eclectrical energy which activates the meter needle.) Record the letter the needle points to.

MAXIMUM LIGHT REQUIREMENTS
Some plants need more light than others. We have graduated the display into 'light letters' - A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H. Each increasing in amount and quality of light. No plant in a position which gives an 'A' reading is likely to do well - while 'H' may be boo bright for shade loving plants.

HOW TO TEST FOR MOISTURE
TAKING A READING
Slide the switch to "Moisture". Insert the probe, vertically if possible, into the pot half way between the edge of the container and the plant stem. For pots over 12" diameter (30cm) position the probe about a third of the way between the stem and the edge of the pot.
Record the number of your moisture reading . Test at least twice to confirm you findings.
INTERPRETING YOUR MOISTURE READING
The numbers from 1 to 10 signify increasing wetness and no plants can tolerate the two extremes for long. In the tables provided plants are listed alphabetically by their popular names.
There is no reason to water if your meter reading is higher than the number given. If the meter reading gives that number or below it is time to water.

WATERING FREQUENCY
The asterisks in the talbe indicate how often each particular plant likes water:
* Check once a week --** Check every 4 or 5 days --*** Check every 3 days
SPECIAL WATERING NEEDS
The Roman numerals in the table indicate these special watering needs:
i ---Spray foliage daily
ii --Never let soil dry out
iii -Keep soil moist but never soggy
iv --Keep soil wet at all times
v ---Allow soil to dry between waterings
vi --Soil should remain dry 4-5 days before rewatering
vii -Reduce watering during dormant period
viii Water from beneath (in saucer). Never wet foliage.
